This Folk Victorian cottage makes a playful impression at a modest scale. Across its compact front, curves and pointed lines pull in different directions, giving the house an informal elegance with a little mischief in it. The effect is lively.
The cottage originally shared its lot with the house next door. A small rear addition came first, followed by a garage. Later work enlarged the back and changed the front.
The roof rises sharply over the projecting bay window. Below, the rounded doorway answers its steep lines with a broad curve, while brackets punctuate the eaves and a weathervane caps the roof. Together, the steep roof, rounded entrance, and small ornaments give the front a playful irregularity.
A white picket fence encloses the patio and garden, with a gate leading to the short stairway approaching the front door. From the street, the fence gives the garden a clear outline; inside the gate, the steps bring you quickly up to the rounded entrance.
