As Pacific Grove’s largest landowner, the Pacific Improvement Company expanded the town through a succession of small-lot subdivisions. In 1907, it extended the residential grid from Junipero toward Sinex, laying out the blocks that contain this Spanish Revival bungalow.
The development enlarged the existing neighborhood, providing additional building lots within the established grid. Home-building followed gradually over the next few decades, with this bungalow representing later infill on an already developed block.
The bungalow occupies a level corner lot, with an open lawn between the house and sidewalk.
A low hedge borders the frontage, while two clipped trees frame the bay window, their rounded crowns rising above the hedge. The shurbs and trees are clustered close to the house, leaving the lawn open.
Two sloping rooflines give the façade its layered profile: the front roof spans the bay window and red entrance door, while a second roof rises behind it, visibly set back. The broad arched bay projects from the pale stucco wall, beside the door’s rounded recess and a narrower arched window. Black railings beneath the windows combine upright bars with curled ornament. Small three-lobed vents punctuate the gable faces, their scalloped outlines echoing the curved openings below.
Three Things I Love About the Home
1. The Window Railings
Scrolled ironwork adds a graceful decorative touch.
2. The Three-Lobed Vents
Small flourishes give the gable peaks a decorative finish.
3. The Rear Courtyard
An inviting outdoor space linking the house, yard, and garage.
