This Folk Victorian cottage sits on a lot that spanned the full block, with a large backyard facing 8th Street. The larger lot was split in the 2004 sale, with the undeveloped land sold separately to a different buyer. On today’s shallower lot, the older structure sits behind a picket fence and a garden so thick that only parts of its brightly colorful exterior show through.
Small trees grow close together behind the fence, hiding much of the bay, while a larger evergreen screens the right side of the house. A vine spreads across the wooden arbor above the front gate. The covered entrance sits back beside the bay, with stairs approaching from the driveway. Above it, bands of purple and gold remain visible through the garden.
Those colors continue across the entrance woodwork, where purple rails connect alternating purple and gold spindles, each ending in a rounded drop. Gold surrounds the projecting bay’s windows, and purple follows the roof edges against the dark siding. The broad hipped roof rises above the trees to a mermaid weather vane, her hair and tail extended towards the sky.
Three Things I Love About the Home
1. The Color Scheme
Two vivid colors that look great together.
2, The Spindlework
Playful curves with a hint of saloon style.
3. The Vine-Covered Arbor
Greenery woven through the woodwork.
